Easily The Best Bluetooth Headphones On The Market

Review Date: July 28, 2010

I've had a pair of Sennheiser PXC 310 Bluetooth headphones for a couple of weeks now. I've purchased many A2DP stereo Bluetooth headsets in the past and can say I'm a fair judge of the comparative sound and build quality as well how well they work as a useful headset.

Here are the pros and cons of this terrific piece of audio technology after using it nearly daily.

PROS:

- Very good build quality. Not as high as you might expect for the price but better than everyone else's except the top of the the line Sony BT headset.
- Nice big controls. Most headsets get this wrong and make the controls too tiny to adjust easily while biking or jogging.
- Amazing, truly mind-blowing sound. Extremely crisp, punchy bass and ultra clear high trebles. No other Bluetooth headset I've ever used sounds nearly as good. This is where the expense justifies itself alone in my opinion.
- Long battery life. This headset takes a listening and keeps on ticking. I recently ran it through an entire cross country flight. Can't be beat.
- USB charging. No need to pack another charger, this one has a mini-USB connector so you can use your laptop or existing USB charger.
- Talk through. A nice feature that allows you to talk easily without taking it off.
- A really good case. It's not a hard case, but it fits extremely well and has a useful accessories pocket.
- Folds down very small. Given that it's a full-sized headset, it's surprising how small it folds down to.

CONS:

- The Li-ion battery pack pulls out too easily. It's not a major problem but disconnecting it after charging often pulls out the whole battery. It's easily reinsertable but a device of this price should not have this kind of obvious mechanical flaw.
- Tiring on the ears after a few hours. This an ON the ear headset, not an OVER the ear and it grabs pretty tight if you have a larger head. Ear fatigue sets in after a couple of hours but is manageable.
- Active noise canceling doesn't seem very powerful. A huge attraction for those that care about audio quality is that it is noise cancelling, one of the few Bluetooth headsets to do so. It just doesn't seem to be very powerful, yet the sound quality is breathtaking even in a noisy plane so not sure this is really a big problem.
- The Bluetooth LED is big, bright, and blinky. You'll get stares if you wear it since it practically beacons its presence.

In short, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat and really hope they keep making these. Finally, the virtually perfect Bluetooth headset.

Great headphones

Headphones are a very nice pair with excellent sound. Overall balanced sound in bass, mids and highs. Connection to bluetooth is effortless. Used on laptop via a Sennheiser BD300USB and on LG Touch via bluetooth. All controls are accessible. Also used on Ipod Touch 3G. Controls did not work and Ipod bluetooth had static and wander when placed in pants pocket so I purchased Sennheiser BD300i transmitter for Ipods. This solved all problems with strong reception, full control and sound actually improved. The BD300i also gave me full controls from my Nokia BH905 bluetooth headphones. These phones are lighter and more portable than the Nokia 905s. Very good purchase. I do have to admit they are like many have said, a little tight. I have carefully bent them open more slightly, but after a couple of hours they begin to feel like a vise on your head.
Works great when it works

Overall, I am satisfied with these headphones. Sound quality is acceptable (better when wired). They manage to fit my big head (6" 200 lbs), but after 3-4 hours of wearing, they can hurt my ears a little.

I successfully paired these headphones to a June 09 MBP13 in Windows 7 64-bit using a Lenovo Thinkpad Bluetooth stack. Everything worked fine.

However, I still cannot get them to work on my Desktop. I am running a Dell XPS630 with their 955C Bluetooth module on Vista 32-bit. The 955 is supposed to support A2DP, but there's no sound coming out after I pair the headphones. The headphones do not appear as an audio source in the Bluetooth settings. Thankfully, they still work in wired mode with the included cord.

I would purchase these headphones again.
Disappointed With Volume Output

If your inclination is to turn down the volume when you really like a tune on your iPOD, these headphones are for you. There is no danger whatsoever of damaging your hearing with these headphones. On the other hand, if you like to crank up the volume occasionally, you will be very frustrated with these headphones. Don't get me wrong: they are solidly built and perform very well, especially when you get the bluetooth transmitter for iPOD that uses the APT-X codec. They just don't have any oomph to them. I do like to set the volume to a moderately high level when I'm listening to music, and these headphones don't allow me that option. And I'm not a volume junkie who likes to hear music at full blast (I even hate and avoid most concerts because I believe the music is overly amplified).

If you want bluetooth headphones that have a full, rich sound, I would recommend Sony's DR-BT50 headphones (unfortunately, not as portable as the Sennheiser). They don't use the advanced APT-X codec, so there is a perceptible delay in the audio transmission. And even more surprising, the Sony headphones still sound better even though they use the SBC codec that doesn't have the advanced sound preserving algorithms of APT-X - it might just be that the increased volume capability, driver size, and the over-the-ear design of the DR-BT50 make it easier to appreciate the richness of the sound. I just hope that Sony adopts the APT-X codec soon so they can bring out the perfect bluetooth headphones with near lossless (CD quality) audio that have plenty of oomph.
